Tween girl-aimed Stardoll.com has closed its New York office, executives at the company confirmed on Wednesday (Jan. 14).
The fast growing site, launched in 2006, has shuttered its three-person sales force in Manhattan. Going forward, officials said that ads sales will be run out of the company’s U.S. flagship office in Los Angeles.
Sources with knowledge of the company’s operations said that while Stardoll continues to add new users and land new advertisers, the move to pull back its East Coast presence was precautionary in light of the increasingly volatile and uncertain economy.
The Stockholm, Sweden-based site, which allows users to dress up virtual celebrities and their own avatars, claims 26 million registered users worldwide and reached 2.2 million users in the U.S. this past December, per comScore.
Recent advertisers include Disney for its upcoming release Confessions of Shopaholic and Paramount Pictures for this weekend’s release Hotel for Dogs.
